Business Consulting with a personal stake

We are a small firm. We know every client by name, and we measure our success by whether yours improves.

How we got here

In 2016, our founder Margaret Caldwell left a fifteen-year career in corporate finance at a Big Four firm. She had spent years advising FTSE 250 companies, but the work she found most satisfying was the occasional project with a mid-sized Scottish business where the recommendations could be implemented the same month they were written.

She rented a desk in a shared office in Old Hessel and took on her first client: a family-owned food distributor in Fife with forty-two employees and a growing cash-flow problem. Within six months that company had restructured its payment terms, renegotiated two supplier contracts and freed up enough working capital to hire a proper logistics coordinator. The owner told Margaret it was the first time anyone had explained his own numbers to him in plain English.

That project set the tone for everything since. We work with businesses that have between ten and two hundred employees, mostly in Scotland and northern England. Our clients include manufacturers, professional services firms, construction companies, retailers and hospitality groups. Each engagement starts with a diagnostic phase lasting one to two weeks, followed by a focused implementation period of eight to sixteen weeks.

Today the firm has four consultants and a part-time office manager. We have completed over ninety engagements. We are deliberately small because we believe the person who diagnoses the problem should also be the person who helps fix it.

What we believe

These are not slogans on a wall. They are the rules we use to decide which projects to take and how to run them.

Honesty before diplomacy

If the data says your plan will not work, we say so. Clients pay us to tell them what their employees are afraid to mention. We would rather lose a project than let someone spend £200,000 on an expansion that the numbers do not support.

Implementation over theory

A slide deck full of recommendations is worth nothing if nobody acts on it. Every engagement includes hands-on implementation time. We sit with your team, build the spreadsheets, redraw the process maps and run the training sessions ourselves.

Respect for people

Consulting projects fail when the people who have to change feel ignored. We interview frontline staff early in every engagement because they usually know exactly where the problems are. Their input shapes the recommendations, and that makes adoption far easier.

Fair pricing

We charge a fixed project fee agreed before work begins. There are no surprise invoices for "additional analysis" or "extended scope." If we underestimate the work, we absorb the extra hours. That keeps us disciplined about defining the scope properly at the start.

The people behind the work

We keep the team small on purpose. When you hire us, you work directly with one of these four consultants, not a junior analyst you have never met.

Key milestones

A short history of the firm, measured in the things that mattered most.

2016

Margaret Caldwell registered Biz Excellence Consult and took on the first client: a food distributor in Fife. The engagement lasted four months and saved the company over £60,000 in annual costs.

2018

David Rennie joined as the second consultant, bringing operations expertise. The firm completed its twentieth engagement and moved into a permanent office at 22 Damian Paddock in Old Hessel.

2020

Isla Fergusson came on board. During the pandemic lockdowns the firm shifted to remote delivery and helped eleven clients restructure their finances to survive the downturn. Ten of those eleven are still trading today.

2022

Callum Hynd joined to build a leadership development practice. The firm passed its sixtieth completed engagement.

2024

We completed our ninetieth engagement. The average client satisfaction score across all projects stands at 4.6 out of 5, based on post-engagement surveys.
